My Controversial Opinion.

Hello and welcome to 2023! My first post of the new year is stating my controversial opinion on a controversial topic. The Topic: The Death Penalty. The Opinion: The best option for Executions is the Firing Squad. Although I am a Death Penalty Abolitionist, I think the Firing Squad is the best option if the country continues to insist on executing people.

The vast majority of people executed in this country are executed by Lethal Injection. It is promoted as the most humane method for executing people. There are many ways actually that Lethal Injection is expensive, cumbersome, and yes, very inhumane. There are countless stories where “painless” executions end up being incredibly painful for the condemned. There are also many instances where executions are postponed, mainly because the condemned are pricked, poked, and prodded in unsuccessful attempts to find veins. Sometimes they are poked and prodded in attempts to find veins for up to 2 hours. Doesn’t sound very humane, does it?

It is no wonder that so many executions go awry. While Doctors sometimes participate in executions, most medical boards recommend against Doctors participating in Executions. So in many cases, you have inexperienced prison official pumping drugs into people’s bodies. Even more importantly, most drug companies do not want their drugs being used to execute people. As a result, there is a constant struggle to obtain drugs, and many of the them are of suspect quality. Not even a qualified Doctor can alleviate those issues.

The Firing Squad fixes many of those issues. Prison Officials are certainly trained in shooting a gun, and there is certainly no struggle to find guns and bullets in the United States. It is a surefire way to execute someone without complications. A person will not feel any pain if a good marksman shoots them in the head. People say that Lethal injection is the most humane form of execution, but who is it humane to? The Death Row inmate, or the people witnessing the execution so they don’t have to be as disturbed by the sight of state sanctioned killing. If people are unnerved by the Firing Squad, than maybe they will realize that it is not worth killing anyone. It could have the opposite effect of making more politicians favor the death penalty, but at least we would execute in a manner that is truly painless to the condemned.

  1. Whoah! You make some good points on a subject I had not thought about in detail. I think the most just sentence is life imprisonment without parole.

  2. Nice piece, Brandon! Keep sharing your thoughts on difficult topics. This one is a gruesome subject, but important. I share your sentiment, “If people are unnerved by the Firing Squad, then maybe they will realize that it is not worth killing anyone” but I hope we can get to the right outcome without firing squads!

  3. I have also read stories about the botched executions. They are pretty distressing. A firing squad would be fast when it happens but the lead up, walking out and waiting for the shots to come, sounds traumatic. It may not be any worse than walking to an execution room and being strapped in on the platform. It is hard to imagine a :humane” way of executing someone but we should be able to do it wtihout torturing them. Good questions for thought Brandon.
